Owl Boys fall to Houlton

For the second time in as many seasons, the Houlton Shiretowners have ended the Owls' season during the semifinal matchup.  Although the Owls played very determined soccer, a surprise goal in the first minute of the second half was the difference in the game.  The final score of 2-1 sends the Shiretowners to the Eastern Maine Class C finals where they will host the #7th seed Orono Boys on Wednesday.

Good season boys!  Hold your heads high.  It was exciting to watch you guys play all season long!

Owl Boys Defeat Bucksport

The Class C Boys Quarterfinal matchup was between the #8 Bucksport Bucks and the #1 Madawaska Owls.  The day was perfect for the event as both teams took the field @ 2:00 this afternoon.  Madawaska scored early and kept it rolling, building a 4-0 lead by half.  Later in the second half, the Owls extended their lead to 7-0 before the Bucks struck back with their first and only goal of the day.  The Owls then scored one more to make the final score of 8-1.

The Owl boys go on to the semifinal matchup.  This will be a rematch of last year's game vs. Houlton.  Houlton defeated George Stevens Academy 2-0 earlier today.  The game vs. Houlton has been set for 3:00 on Friday, October 26 in Madawaska.  Please make arrangements to attend!

Lady Owls' Season Ends

On Tuesday, our Lady Owls travelled to Bangor to face the #2 ranked Orono girls.  The game was moved to Husson College due to wet field conditions in Orono.  The Owls played hard the first half and were only down 1-0 at that point.  Later in the second half, the Lady Owls tied the game, making the score even at 1 a piece.  Unfortunately, the Owls ran out of time and gave up a pair of goals later in the half.  The final score was 3-1. Although the season is now over, the Lady Owls can be proud of the gains they made, especially late in the season.  Good season girls!

Lady Owls Win!

Our Lady Owls came home victorious yesterday afternoon by defeating the 7th ranked PCHS Pirates by a score of 2-1. The win wasn't an easy however, as it required extra time to earn the win.  Freshman standout Aspen Cote netted the game winner for the Owls with 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.  CORRECTION: Junior Shannon Blanchette scored the first goal for the Owls.

The Lady Owls move on to the Quarterfinals and face the 2nd ranked Orono Girls.  The game has been set for 2:00 on Tuesday, October 23rd @ Husson College.  The girls will be departing MMHS @ 8:00 Tuesday morning!  GO OWLS!

Post-Harvest Wake-Up Call

Tuesday, October 9, proved to be typical October evening of soccer...cold!  Unfortunately, the air wasn't the only thing that was cold, as the Madawaska Owl boys team received a post-harvest wake-up call as very determined Caribou Vikings team met them on the field.

Displaying speed and skill that is common of class B playoff teams, Caribou showed Madawaska that they will have to step-up their game if they want to make a run in the playoffs.  Scoring for Caribou were Nolan McDuffie with two goals and Kameron Manter with one.  Tim Deschenes made 7 saves of the 10 shots on goal that he faced.  Many of those saves were incredible diving saves that kept the game close for the Owls.

This is the first loss for the Owls this season, and the first game in which they have been held scoreless.  Hopefully the remaining 2 games of the season, and the extra practice time will prepare them for the battles ahead in playoffs.

The boys and girls varsity teams take the field this Thursday, October 11, against Limestone.  The girls game will be @ 5:00 and the boys game @ 7:00.

Both Varsity Teams Win on Thursday

On Thursday evening, September 13, Madawaska High School hosted Van Buren high school in a varsity double header between the two teams.

In the first game of the night, the Lady Owls squared off against the Lady Crusaders, who had previously beat Madawaska when the two teams played in Van Buren.   This evening however featured an energetic and determined Owls team.  The game was a battle the entire way, with one team scoring after the other.  Finally Madawaska was able to hold on to a 4-3 lead and seal the victory, a victory that may not have happened had it not been for the last minute save by fullback Megan Pelletier who cleared a Van Buren shot just inches from the goal line.  Scoring for the Lady Owls were Nathalie Cyr (2 goals), Lindsey Lavoie, and Sam Nadeau.  The lady owls now get a well-deserved break as we head into harvest time.  Their next scheduled game will be on October 11.

It was showtime once again for the Owl boys as they put on a display of offensive and defensive power against the Van Buren boys.  Although it took a bit of time to get going in the game, the Owls earned 3 goals in each half to beat the Crusaders 6-0.  Ian Lee led the way with 4 goals and Sam Cyr earned 2 of his own.  Keepers Tim Deschenes and Craig Gendreau both earned the shutout by keeping the slate clean in each their half as goalkeeper.   The Owl boys will also break for harvest.  Their next game will occur in Fort Kent on October 4.

Boys win, girls lose to FK

It has been a busy week of soccer for both varsity teams.  The week was highlighted during our rivalry matches vs. Fort Kent on Tuesday (girls) and Wednesday (boys).  Although there are still many games to play in a season, there's always something special in the air when Fort Kent comes to town.

In Tuesday night's game, our Lady Owls met a very determined Lady Warriors team.  Although the game was close several weeks ago in Fort Kent when our girls lost 3-1, this time, the Warriors stepped it up a notch, winning the contest 6-1.  Scoring the lone goal for the Owls was junior Shannon Blanchette.

Wednesday night the Warrior boys came to town, and so did half of the residents of Fort Kent!  With a large crowd looking on, the Owl boys put on quite a show, proving that they deserve to be on top of the Class C standings for Eastern Maine.  The owls scored twice in the first half, both by junior striking star Ian Lee, and looked like they were on their way to an easy win.  Since nothing comes easy against Fort Kent, the Warriors struck immediately after the break, pulling the score to 2-1.  Fortunately, Lee wasn't satisfied with his 2 first half goals, as he netted 2 more in the second half.  The 4-1 victory proves that Madawaska is the team to beat in Class C East.

On Friday evening, 9/7/12, both Madawaska Varsity teams got a well deserved win vs. the Limestone Eagles.

Later in the evening, the Owl boys kept their win streak alive defeating the Eagles 4-1.  Scoring for the Owls were sophomore Ethan Wetmore, senior Aaron Thibeault, and junior Ian Lee (2).  Read the BDN entry here.

Both teams host Calais today at the 11th Avenue game field in Madawaska.  The girls game begins @ 1:00pm and the boys game will follow @ 2:30.  It's a great day for soccer!

Madawaska @ Van Buren Recap

On Saturday evening, the Madawaska boys and Van Buren boys faced off in the first game of the evening...and the first game between these two teams this year.  Scoring early and often, the Owl boys wasted no time taking the lead, and holding it for the entire game.  The Owls ended up with 8 goals and earned another shutout.  The Owl boys are now 5-0 on the season.

Later in the second game, the Lady Owls lost a hard fought game 4-2 against the Lady Crusaders.  Despite a 2-1 halftime lead, the Owls couldn't hold on to the lead for much longer, giving up 3 goals in the second half.  The Lady Owls are now 1-5 on the season.

Madawaska Teams Split vs. Central Aroostook

In their home opener of the sea on, the Lady Owls lost a hard-fought game to the Lady Panthers of Central Aroostook.  The Owls started off strong when junior Shannon Blanchette blasted a shot over the Central Aroostook keeper.  Freshman Aspen Cote also scored for the Owls.  Unfortunately, the visiting Panthers earned their 3rd victory by scoring late in the game. (Bangor News Article)

In the second game of the evening, the Madawaska Owl boys dominated the Central Aroostook boys, winning by a score of 4-0.  This game marks the 3rd shutout for the owls in 4 games this season.  They owls have only given up one goal in 4 games.  Daren Jandreau and Jake Gendreau each had a goal for the Owls, while Ian Lee scored 2. (Bangor News Article)

Both Varsity teams travel to Van Buren on Saturday, September 1, to face the Crusaders.  The boys will play first @ 5:00pm, followed by the girls @ 7:00.

Madawaska Boys Beat Houlton

The defending Eastern Maine champion Houlton Shiretowners were in less than championship form when they came to Madawaska this week.  Although the score was 1 to 1 at halftime, the Owls turned on the heat in the second half to pull away with a 4 - 1 victory.

Goalkeeper Tim Deschenes of Madawaska was nothing short of amazing with several diving saves to keep the Shires of the scoreboard.   Junior Ian Lee scored his second hat-trick in 2 games this season, while Travis Thibeault added his own goal for the Owls.

Madawaska travels to Caribou on Friday to face the Caribou Vikings in their own home opener.  Kickoff will be at 7:00!

Painting Party - Saturday, August 18 @ 9:00am

It has been several years since the soccer field buildings have had some TLC.  Several parents have come forward and expressed interest in helping paint some of these buildings and get things looking the way they should be.

Due to this fact, you are invited to a “painting party” at the 11th Avenue varsity game field this coming Saturday, August 18 @ 9:00am!  Our hope is to paint the snack shack, the kick board, and the team dugout benches during this time.

If possible we ask that you bring any personal painting supplies that you may have.  We will need paint scrapers, brushes, and rollers.  All are invited to attend, the more people we have helping out, the quicker the job will get done!

Madawaska Boys Tennis going to EM Finals!

On Saturday afternoon, the 2nd seeded Madawaska Boys defeated the 3rd seeded Van Buren Boys in the semi-final round of playoffs to earn a trip to the Eastern Maine Finals.  This is the 3rd time in 5 years that the boys have made it to the Eastern Maine finals, winning it in 2009.

Earning victories for the owls were first singles Ian Lee who broke a 2 match losing streak vs. first singles Eric Laplante of Van Buren.  Although Ian lost the first set 4-6, he came back to grind out a 7-6 (7-5) tie break win in the second set, then cruised to a 6-2 victory in the third.  Third singles Matt DECHENES also dug deep in his first ever matchup against senior Mark Lavesseur of VB.  Matt won the first and third sets of his match 6-3 and 6-1.  Finally, the always dependable doubles team of Greg Faucher and Aaron Thibeault earned their 3rd straight victory over Van Buren's first doubles team of Bouchard and Banks.  Their 6-3, 6-4 straight set victory was enough for Madawaska to go to Waterville this Wednesday, where they will face defending EM champions George Stevens academy.

Note: The Madawaska girls also played a semi-final match on this day.  Unfortunately, the Lady Owls lost 4-1 to the George Stevens Academy girls.  This was a fantastic season for the girls, making it to the final 4 of Eastern Maine.  Great job girls!
