Owl Boys lose 2 in a row

Our boys having been learning the hard way this week that the competition is going to be tough this season. Earlier in the week, the owl boys dropped a game to Fort Kent by a score of 59 - 37. Last night, the boys met an equally demanding Central Aroostook team who won the game by a score of 78 - 48.

The challenge for the Owls will be to grow as a team this season and keep improving all year long. With this group of boys,it shouldn't be a problem!

Home Opener Victories for Owl Girls and Boys!

Both the Lady Owls and the Owl Boys earned victories against neighboring school Wisdom High in their first matchup of the young 2011-2012 season.

In the first game of the evening, the Lady Owls cruised to a 45 - 24 victory led by outstanding defensive pressure from senior captains Nicole Cyr and Amanda Nadeau. With the two guards making multiple steals in the game, Madawaska kept the pioneers with minimal points in the first quarter. Earning a first time varsity start were juniors Hannah Cote and Lauren Tingley who both added much needed height to the Madawaska team grabbing rebound after rebound. Junior forward Kelly Dugal also provided some big shots to help secure an Owl victory in their first game of the season.

The second game of the evening featured our Owl Boys vs. the Pioneer Boys. Led by Matt Deschenes' 15 points, Madawaska quickly jumped out into the lead and never looked back. Senior center Travis Pelletier was effective for the Owls making some huge plays on both the offensive and defensive ends, while seniors Dylan Wetmore and Devin Pelletier played smothering defense all night. In his season as a Varsity starter, junior guard Aaron Thibeault showed some great ball control while handling the point for Madawaska the majority of the night.

The Owl Girls travel to Central Aroostook while the Owl Boys host Fort Kent on Wednesday night.

Owl Boys' Season Ends

Playing a team three times in a season is never easy. The Owl Boys found that out today as they were defeated by the Houlton Shiretowners by a score of 1-0. This was a game of impressive defense by both teams; however, it was Houlton who came out on top by scoring on a corner kick early in the first half, and holding on to that lead for the entire match.

The Owl boys end the season at 14-1-2. This was an unbelievable first season for coach Dean! Congratulations go out to him and all of the boys for their amazing display of soccer skills throughout the season. For the seniors Matt D., Devan, Dylan, Kyle T, Kyle B, Matt B, and Greg, thank you for 4 wonderful years! The skills you have learned as a member of the Owls will allow you to play and succeed at the college level. Please keep that in mind as you make arrangements for next year. Best of luck to all of you! The rest of the boys, get ready for next season!

Lady Owls' Season Ends

Our Lady Owls boarded the bus this morning at 7:30am with determination in their hearts and an upset victory on their minds. Unfortunately, the Owls met their match as they fell 3-1 to top seeded Central.

As the season comes to an end, we would like to congratulate the Lady Owls on their wonderful season. Making it to the semi-finals is nothing to be ashamed about. To the seniors: Thank you for dedicating your time and energy into the soccer program for all these years. We have an unbelievable amount of young female soccer players who look up to each and every one of you and hope to someday make their community proud the way you have all done this season! To the underclassmen: Come back stronger and more determined next season and take it all the way!

Boys Soccer Semi-Finals: Madawaska vs. Houlton

These two teams will meet for the third time this season on Saturday, October, 29 @ 3:00pm in Madawaska. Come cheer on the boys as they look to make it back to the Eastern Maine finals!

Quarterfinal Victory for the Owl Boys!

The Sumner boys took the field at 1:00 even though the game was set for 3:00. Determined that this was their year, they had no idea that the Owl boys had the same thing on their mind. The Owls struck first when Ian Lee was awarded a penalty shot in the first half. The penalty shot itself did not find the back of the net, instead, deflecting off the keeper and back to Lee's foot, the rebound shot finally found it's place in the goal for a 1-0 lead. Senior Matt Deschenes was spectacular on the day showing that he too can find the back of the net with 2 of his own goals. Both teams played tough, physical soccer for the entire 80 minutes, but it was the Owl team defense that led the way, anchored by some brilliant goalkeeper saves from our own Kyle Blanchette.

Here's how the Bangor Daily News reported on the game: "At Madawaska, Ian Lee scored his second goal of the game with 23 minutes left in the second half to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the second-ranked Owls to victory.

Matt Deschenes assisted on the eventual game-winner and Lee scored on a penalty kick in the first half for 12-0-2 Madawaska, which led 1-0 at intermission.

The 10th-seeded Tigers from East Sullivan (12-4) rallied from a 2-0 deficit when Gabe O’Brien scored off a Baramee Janla assist, then set up a Joey Malloy goal — two minutes apart — to make it 2-2 only 3:23 into the second half.

Kyle Blanchette made nine saves on 11 shots for the Owls.

Sam Smith made 14 saves on 24 shots for Sumner."

Madawaska Girls Quarterfinal Victory!

The Lady Owls kept fans on their toes Tuesday afternoon by allowing Calais to stick around for most the game. Finally, late in the game, the Madawaska girls were on fire, scoring 4 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. Leading the way for the Owls was Megan Ouellette with one goal more than a hat trick to seal the Owls victory, while earning a semi-final matchup against the winner of #1 Central and # 8 Bucksport.

Here's how the game was summarized in this morning Bangor Daily News:

"At Madawaska, Meagan Ouellette scored four goals, including three in the game’s final four minutes, to lift the No. 4 Owls by the No. 5 Blue Devils.

Allison Hill scored an unassisted goal one minute into the game for Calais before Madawaska responded in the second half when Ouellette scored off a Nathalie Cyr assist seven minutes in.

Nicole Cyr gave the Owls the lead seven minutes later when she converted a Samantha Nadeau assist. Nadeau then assisted on Ouellette’s next two goals at 4:04 and 2:16, respectively, before Ouellette capped the scoring surge with an unassisted tally with eight seconds left.

Amanda Nadeau made 11 saves on 15 shots for 8-6-1 Madawaska and Paige Gillespie made 15 on 22 for 12-3 Calais."

Girls and Boys both win!

On a wet and miserable Thursday afternoon, the varsity girls and boys soccer teams were able to shine some light by defeating their opponents in near end-of-the season match-ups.

The Lady Owls travelled to Limestone to face the Eagles in their last meeting of the year. While cruising to a 4-0 victory, Nicole Cyr scored once, Megan Ouellette scored once, and Nathalie Cyr was one goal shy of a hat trick with 2 goals of her own. The Lady Owl defense was successful in shutting down the Eagles as they earned a shutout.

On the boys side, our Owl Boys travelled to the PI turf to host a game against a determined Southern Aroostook team. Every goal by the Owls was quickly answered by the Warrors as our boys narrowly escaped the game with their undefeated season still in tact winning 3-2. Scoring for the Owls was Ian Lee with 2 and Dylan Wetmore with one.

Both teams end their regular seasons next week against Houlton. The girls will go to Houlton on Monday and the boys will host Houlton on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, the Van Buren girls answered with 3 goals of their own, two coming in the second half of the match, to earn the victory. The Lady Owls go on to play the Limestone girls on Thursday evening in Limestone.

For the second match of the evening, the Owl boys cruised to a decisive 4 - 1 victory over the Van Buren boys. Scoring for the Owls were, Ian Lee with 2, Matt Deschenes with 1, and Jake Gendreau with 1. The Owls hope to continue their unbeaten streak when they host the Southern Aroostook boys on the Presque Isle turf, Thursday afternoon at 3:30

Lady Owls Beat Van Buren!!!

Despite this author's lack of participation at the Lady Owls vs. Lady Crusaders game on Wednesday evening because of frigid temperatures and harsh winds, the word on the street is that the Owls were in a defensive zone, shutting down many of Van Buren's efforts to win on their home field. Particular kudos go out to defenders Linsey Lavoie and Kelly Dugal for working hard to slow down the dangerous Van Buren offense.

Owls beat the Warriors!

Soccer season was in full-effect this evening with the Madawaska Owl boys visiting the Fort Kent Warrior boys for their second matchup of the 2011 regular season. With the fall air cool and crisp, and the fans anxious for another showdown between the two class-c contenders, the Owl boys showed why they are undefeated this season by dominating the Warriors and proving they can win in Fort Kent.

Scoring for the Owls was Ian Lee with two goals, and Luc Daigle with one. Next week the Owls face Van Buren on Tuesday, October 11 at home and Southern Aroostook on Thursday, October 13 in Presque Isle.

Lady Owls defeat Calais

The post-potato harvest haze often seen by teams who haven't played in over two-weeks didn't seem to phase our Lady Owls as they cruised to a 4-2 victory over the Calais Blue Devils on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon.

With an overall record of 5-4-1, the girls are sitting comfortably in 4th place for the Eastern Maine, Class C standings. With only 4 games remaining, the girls will have their eyes on post season play in the upcoming weeks.

Owl Boys and Warrior Boys Tie

After 80 minutes of regular time, and additional 10 minutes of overtime, neither the Madawaska Owl boys nor the Fort Kent Warrior boys could earn the victory this evening. Owl Boys and Girls top Eagles

Madawaska hosted a varsity double header this evening against the Eagles of Limestone. In the first game, the Owl boys continued their domination over season opponents by defeating the Eagles 6 - 0. Although the goals were plentiful and all deserving of praise, none was prettier than a cross by senior Matt Deschenes to a wide open fellow senior Matt Boucher, who headed the ball perfectly into the corner for his first career varsity goal. Goalies Kyle Blanchette and Tim Deschenes both earned the shutout for the 7 - 0 Owl boys.

The second game of the evening featured our Lady Owls. Although they had a sluggish start to the game, the girls showed determination in the second half and fought hard to break away and earn a 6 - 2 victory. Scoring for the girls were Nicole Cyr with 3 goals, Meagan Ouellette with 2 goals, and Victoria Gagnon with 1. The Lady Owls are now 3 -3 -1 this season.

Owl Boys dominate Vikings

On a beautiful Friday evening, our Owl boys showed that they can not only play with class B teams, but they can dominate at that level as well. Showing a unique display of dangerous offensive abilities, the Owls featured 4 different scorers while cruising to a 4-0 victory. Senior Dylan Wetmore showed outstanding leadership this evening by scoring the first goal of the evening, a beautiful direct kick that bent to the far corner of the net, leaving the Viking keeper helpless as it sailed over his head. Several minutes later, Wetmore again showed great skill as he crossed a textbook-perfect ball across the goal area to his teammate Ian Lee, who headed the ball for the Owls second goal of the evening. In the second half, the Owls showed that the future is bright as sophomores Jake Gendreau and Sam Cyr each recorded beautiful goals sealing the Owls victory, leaving no chance for a Viking comeback. The Owl defense led by Senior back Kyle Tardif and Senior Keeper Kyle Blanchette recorded their first shutout of the season and proving that they are beginning to feel comfortable to the new defensive setup that Coach Dean has developed for them.

The Owl boys go on the road to face Van Buren next Tuesday at 5:00.

Although Houlton scored first in the game, our girls were able to equalize the score at 1 - 1 late in the first half. Houlton then went ahead 2 - 1 which is where the score remained for most of the second half. With only minutes remaining, Madawaska was awarded a penalty shot when a Houlton player was called for a handball in the penalty area. Senior Nicole Cyr was selected to take the shot, which sailed left of the keeper, and evened the score a 2 goals apiece. Neither team was able to capitalize on the 10 minutes of extra time, resulting in a 2 - 2 final score.
