Quarterfinal Victory for the Owl Boys!

The Sumner boys took the field at 1:00 even though the game was set for 3:00. Determined that this was their year, they had no idea that the Owl boys had the same thing on their mind. The Owls struck first when Ian Lee was awarded a penalty shot in the first half. The penalty shot itself did not find the back of the net, instead, deflecting off the keeper and back to Lee's foot, the rebound shot finally found it's place in the goal for a 1-0 lead. Senior Matt Deschenes was spectacular on the day showing that he too can find the back of the net with 2 of his own goals. Both teams played tough, physical soccer for the entire 80 minutes, but it was the Owl team defense that led the way, anchored by some brilliant goalkeeper saves from our own Kyle Blanchette.

Here's how the Bangor Daily News reported on the game: "At Madawaska, Ian Lee scored his second goal of the game with 23 minutes left in the second half to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the second-ranked Owls to victory.

Matt Deschenes assisted on the eventual game-winner and Lee scored on a penalty kick in the first half for 12-0-2 Madawaska, which led 1-0 at intermission.

The 10th-seeded Tigers from East Sullivan (12-4) rallied from a 2-0 deficit when Gabe O’Brien scored off a Baramee Janla assist, then set up a Joey Malloy goal — two minutes apart — to make it 2-2 only 3:23 into the second half.

Kyle Blanchette made nine saves on 11 shots for the Owls.

Sam Smith made 14 saves on 24 shots for Sumner."
